Do we need an AI strategy?
The short answer
Yes, but not the kind with a slide called Vision. An AI strategy that works is a short list of outcomes, each with one owner and one number that should move: invoices paid in two days instead of nine, support tickets answered the same day (examples). Write the outcomes first. Then, for each one, find the slowest step between where you are and where you want to be. That step is the project. Some of those projects will use AI. Some will use a shared spreadsheet. Some will be a phone call. The tool is the last decision, not the first one. If your strategy document lists models, vendors and platforms before it lists outcomes, it isn't a strategy. It's a shopping list with a cover page. Start from the outcome, work backward, and let the tools earn their place.
Outcome first
- A list of outcomes.
- Each one has an owner.
- That's the strategy.
